Bighorn Mountain in Boulder County has an official elevation of 8,556 feet. It’s summit ridge has four separate projections that are close to this elevation, but only the projection at its south end attains it. On top of this point someone has built a rock wall shelter having built-in rock sitting benches. The rocks comprising the wall and benches are all mortared in. The structure is called the Crow’s Nest, and it’s a good place to sit out of the wind and admire the magnificent views of mountains in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area and those in the Wild Basin of Rocky Mountain National Park. Take the easy hike up from parking along Sunshine Drive to the Crow’s Nest; the round trip hike is about 1 mile, with an elevation gain of approximately 300 feet. Enjoy the scenic views. While there, also find a small cache, hidden in a cavity nook at the base of a moderate-sized more vertical rock formation. The nook is “guarded" by a spiny raspberry vine and the cache is covered by a couple of small rocks. Place it back securely, so it does not migrate downhill.
Enjoy your relatively short hike, and appreciate the fine vistas laid out before you. And collect the real treasure by putting your caching name on the cache log!
