It is that time of year again! Join the Grand Lake Campout Peeps for a "Let's Go For A Hike" Event - a series of events started by famed Colorado Geocaching family Memfis Mafia.  We are going to repeat a cool location from last year!  The event will take place at the POSTED COORDINATES from 12:30PM to 1:00PM on Sunday May 19th.  Get there however you can, and plan adequate travel time!

Near the event coords!

For those whom aren't familiar with the LGFAH geocaching events, this will be a Meet and Greet style event.  We will swap geocaching stories, trade and discover trackables, and just get to know one another.

There is a twist: This event isn't in some comfy coffee shop or a busy restaurant.  The event is near some sweet abandonded structures at 7,291 feet

There are plenty of ways to access this event - most involve hiking.  Extra points for style if you happen to parachute in or find another unique way to the event.  Check the descriptions of nearby caches for some cool ideas on how to get here.  The following directions are copied from the closest cache to the event itself:

You can approach this cache from a couple of different directions: via the Mt Muscoco trail off of the Mt Cutler trail, from the Daniels Pass trail off of N. Cheyenne Canyon Rd, or the other end of the Daniels Pass trail off of Gold Camp Road. The hike from N. Cheyenne Canyon Rd is probably the shortest, but it is quite steep and slippery, and will require you to cross the stream, which may not be possible depending on the run-off.
If you decide to go from N. Cheyenne Canyon Rd, go up the road past the Mt Cutler trailhead until you see the 2 mile marker (about 1/2 mile from Mt. Cutler). There will be a wide spot to park on the uphill side of the road, and smaller place to park on the downhill side. From the parking area on the downhill side, walk down to the creek side, and look for a convenient place to hop the rocks to the other side. BE CAUTIOUS if the creek is running fast and/or deep. The rocks are slippery and you may be swept off your feet.
Once on the other side, you'll find the trail heading up hill. Continue to where the trail intersects with the Muscoco Trail, and then continue across the trail and continue south. The trail is easy to find from the intersection, and once you're about .14 miles down, look for the trail forking to the right. From here, the trail is not always very obvious due to being quite over grown. ... Keep following the trail for a little over a mile, and you'll be rewarded. The total round trip hike from N. Cheyenne Canyon Rd is around 3.75 miles. Add about a mile if you come from Mt. Cutler.

Hiking in the Elements

Don't forget!  You are outside in Colorado.  Be prepared for whatever mother nature might throw at us!  I will try to make announcements closer to the event date regarding predicted condtitions, however you should always be prepared for anything.

See you at the settlement!

Additional Waypoints

0182Y8N - Longer Trailhead
N 38° 47.510 W 104° 53.220
This is the trailhead and Parking areafor the longer, but more established route. Start here, and hike to where the Cutler Trail and Muscoco Trail split off. Take the muscoco trail toward geocache GC371 (Four Paws Geocache), and just a few feet before that cache there is a small trail going down the hill on the left (toward the event coords!). Again, longer - but more established trails.
0282Y8N - Parking #21
N 38° 47.370 W 104° 53.725
This is the Parking Area for the shorter, steeper route. The Parking area is labeled as Parking Area #21, and is slightly limited. Check out Trailhead #2 waypoint to find out where to go from here!
0382Y8N - Trailhead #2
N 38° 46.507 W 104° 53.558
This Trailhead is closest to parking area#21. It is a little hard to get to, and if you miss it by just a hundred feet or so, you might accidentally end up on the wrong trail and find yourself on the wrong side of the ravine! When you start from this trailhead, it is a steep climb all the way to the ridge where you intersect with the Muscoco trail. From that intersection, don't stay on the muscoco trail, and start down off of the ridge toward the event coords!

I came up the Mt Muscoco cut-off, over the pass and down to the settlement. Since I was early, I was able to find the nearby cache and take some photos. After awhile Jinxer05 and her son (Tyler) showed up and a message showed up on the cache computer page that the hosts would be late. We had a nice chat and then decided that the others must not be coming, so we headed back up the trail. Jinxer05 and Tyler headed back toward Mt. Cutler and their car at the pass, while I headed down the cutoff to my car. Sure enough, I was pleased to run into the hosts and their party part way down! Thanks to them I got to enjoy a wonderful hike to a special place that I might never found on my own!! Thanks!!

Enjoyed the campout stickers that were left on my car for us to find when we got back. That was a treat! We are looking forward to the camp out!

My son and I came to this event via the longer route. It definitely did have some difficult areas but it was very fun! Ran into Kenya Sherpa At the event coords, but unfortunately missed the rest of the bunch that didn’t quite make it. That would’ve been a very hard hike with Littles and injuries to boot, and turning back probably saved them all from being rained on. It would’ve been fun to run into everyone, but we had a blast anyway. Totally worth the trip from Denver, as we have never explored this area before.

Well, we never made it. First time not making it to our own event.

The "easier" route wasnt really all that easier, and between exasperated injuries and a cold kiddo we decided to turn back at four paws after a small snack.

Ran into KenyanSherpa on the way down, he said there were some folks at the event. Hope you all enjoyed the area! It's one of my favorites.

Sorry again we couldn't make it, and we hope everyone took lotsa cool pictures! Hopefully we will make the next event. Lol

The hosts told us we could log even if we (and they) never made it. We had tons of fun and hopefully we can make it all the way next time!
