This is a CHALLENGE CACHE. The container is at the listed coordinates, but requirements of the challenge must be satisfied before you can post a “Find” on this cache.

Old caches are real jewels that we should treasure. They are “golden”! I’m so appreciative of the original hiders, and of the owners who have maintained them over the years for our enjoyment. This challenge cache requires that you find and log a dozen caches that are first-placed state caches. If the original, first-placed cache has been archived, you can use the next-oldest cache that is still active. The oldest active cache in any of the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia can be used for your dozen qualifying caches.

When you have found and logged your dozen, make the hike in to the challenge cache coordinates. It’s a long, but fun hike, essentially all on a good trail. It requires an effort of approximately 10 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 3,000 feet. Be certain to spend some time enjoying the remarkable scenery viewable from the cache location. Between your hiking and viewing periods, you’ll have plenty of time to think back on which caches of the 12 were really special ones for you! I’ll bet that all 12 had very memorable, special dimensions. Old caches seem to embrace such qualities!

The 5.0/4.0 Difficulty/Terrain rating for the cache pertains to the overall effort needed to log your chosen dozen. The rating for reaching and finding the final challenge container is 2.0/4.0. The cache container is a camoed, medium-sized pill vial. Be certain to bring a pen or pencil to sign the log sheet.

In your log, list the state, the cache name, the GC number, and your date of find for each of your Golden Dozen caches. If you’d like, indicate in your log which caches of your 12 have been especially memorable to you, and why. Have fun finding your dozen, and have fun on your hike to find the challenge cache!

I don't quite qualify for this one yet, but I will after my summer road trip in August. And since they're going to be closing the mountain tomorrow, I thought I'd better make the effort now. It sure was a beautiful day for it. Lots of wildflowers on the way up, even if I did get rained on heading back to the car.

Today was a twofer day. Two great caches in one day. We have had our eyes on this cache for some time and today was the day to make it happen. Hiked on a hot day to the summit and found two caches in just a short distance. Thanks for this vantage point too. Thanks, Steve for this and the other cache up here.

#31434 This was one of the toughest hikes. Today was cloudy and cool for July and my goal was to find Golden Dozen and UTM - Up The Mountain. I was successful at both and a few traditonals. TFTC

I have found 46 oldest in state caches and DC.

Some of my favorites were HI, AK, NY, ME, VT, FL, ID, MT, DE, WI, MI, SD.

Kenyansherpa and I had a great day on the mountain today even though we did get a little wet. This cache was our common objective today. Last August while he and I were doing the DeCaLiBron loop of 14ers, we were talking about challenges we were each working on and I mentioned I needed just two more State "oldests" to qualify for this cache. Doug said he had already qualified but hadn't had the opportunity to go for the final so he said to let him know when I got qualified and we'd make the hike together. I was able to pick up the last qualifier I needed this past March so I got in touch with him to see when might work to get together. Doug is very busy right now preparing all the logistics for the USA teams to compete in the Summer Olympics in Rio but he did have some weekends available in May. So we set today as the date to make the hike.

Since he was driving up from Colorado Springs this morning we met in Loveland at 8:00 am. The forecast was for rain later in the morning and thunderstorms in the afternoon so we didn't waste any time getting going. He had not been on the Round Mountain trail so we jumped in my truck and headed off to find some early stages of a cache and then to the trailhead.

When we arrived at the trailhead it was misting lightly. It was a little slow going for the first couple hours as Kenyansherpa juggled three different caches at the same time. But once we finished the lower caches we made good time as we headed for the summit and the final for this cache. Most of the way up the trail was foggy and misty so we missed out on the views. Upon arriving at GZ the container was quickly located and we celebrated with the signing of the log and a couple photos.

After replacing the cache we headed over to Denali's other nearby cache for Kenyansherpa to find and then made our way down the trail to the parking area. When we got to about the 3 mile sign the mist turned to light rain. When we got about to the 2 mile sign we heard some distant thunder. As we got closer to the 1 mile sign we saw lightning in the distance. Then just as we reached the parking lot the downpour started. What great timing! BigSmile Jumped in the truck, cranked up the heater and headed back to town.

I've attached a screenshot of my dozen qualifiers. These oldies are special caches and I really enjoy it when I have an opportunity to go for one. I think my favorite of my dozen is Cliffcache. It's in a really nice location in South Dakota's Black Hills and there is a fun "chute" you need to descend to reach the cache. When I was there the trail was too muddy for my rental sedan so I parked at the turn off the good gravel road and hiked the two or so miles in. It's one I'll always remember. Thanks Kenyansherpa for a great outing on Round Mountain and thanks Denali41 for placing this marvelous challenge!!!
