There’s a famous, highly-traveled hiking trail in Rocky Mountain National Park that ascends to the summit of Twin Sisters Peak, a Ranked Peak within Larimer County. The eastern of the two Sisters is the higher point (elevation 11,428 feet). The park’s boundary with Roosevelt National Forest cuts through this summit point, and a great cache,
A Pair of Queens, was hidden by acefaser in 2008 near the top of the East Sister; the cache is positioned just within the national forest property.
36.85 km south south east of this famous landmark of RMNP is another set of peaks having the identical name as these points in the park: Twin Sisters Peak. It’s a Ranked Peak within Boulder County. It, also, has East and West summits, the eastern one being the higher of the two (elevation 8,738). But these “other” twins are not a popular hiking destination! Beginning today, the Twins in Larimer County and the Twins in Boulder County share another feature–now, BOTH support geocaches.
To find the cache in Boulder County (The Other Twins) you will need to do a bit of homework; your calculation to determine the coordinates for The Other Twins will necessitate paying some attention to parameters for A Pair of Queens. The Other Twins cache is 35.129 km south of and 11.101 km east of A Pair of Queens cache.
So calculate the coordinates for The Other Twins, and then take a nice hike to the cache vicinity. The cache is not at the actual summit of the East Sister, but it’s nearby. Don’t go to the false (listed) coordinates on the West Twin. To reach that location might require some gnarly, roped technical climbing.
Once you’ve found the cache and signed its treasure, go to the summit and relax on a soft rock. Eat your lunch or a snack while taking in the sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, especially the Longs-Meeker massif and the captivating summits of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. They rise awesomely to the west of this East Sister. Look for Twin Sisters Peak in RMNP. These twins appear prominent from their counterparts here in Boulder County. And make certain that you gaze over and down at the West Sister and appreciate the fact that I did not hide The Other Twin on THIS other twin! And oh, at the summit of East Sister note the Benchmark. Also, find the nearby USGS Reference Marks. You can double dip on this hike by collecting a cache as well as the summit Benchmark!
Be certain to pack food, fluids, and some extra clothing, in the event your hike takes longer than you anticipate, or if you encounter a change in weather!
