There were three squatter communities in the early days of Pueblo; Smelter Hill, Salt Creek and Pepper Sauce Bottoms. The people who settled in these communities did so without any right or title to the land because it was either public land or land that belonged to their employer.
In 1942, Father Murray, then assistant pastor at Mount Carmel church and a small group of parishioners organized Mount Carmel Credit Union. The major goal was to assist squatters to obtain title to their homes.

Pepper Sauce Bottoms became known then as "The Bronx" and is located to the north of what is now Midtown Shopping Center and to the east of the Santa Fe Railroad yards.
