Want a great view of that geocaching jewel, Turkey Roost? If so, get to this cache site and be prepared to spend some time admiring the western features of the awesome "roost" as well as the course of the North Fork Cache La Poudre River as it tumbles toward its canyon on the north side of Turkey Roost. This is a pleasant, remote location, and its unlikely that you'll encounter other adventurers while you are here! Look above you at the amazing sheer rock faces of Peak 7580. For years I've admired this jagged mountain from the tops of nearby mountains and from the Cherokee Park Road near Trails End. When I planned this hike, I had hoped to hide the cache at this peak's summit. But as my puppy Orizaba and I hiked closer and closer, it became apparent that reaching its top would be more than a rock scramble--and I had left my climbing gear and belaying partner at home! So the cache terrain rating suddenly became "easier" than I'd anticipated! But it will still take some effort on your part to reach this marvelous spot. The entire hike is off-trail, but the approach terrain is relatively gentle.
The cache is a cylindrical jar wrapped in black tape. There is signal bounce off the cliff that soars above it, so I placed it in a specific location that can be easily described. Near GZ note the large Ponderosa Pine tree. On the cliff side of the tree a large rock contacts the tree trunk near its base. On the rock's left side (looking toward the cliff) is a nook. The cache resides in this nook, covered by a number of dead sticks/branches. Be certain to cover it well after you have completed your cache log signing ceremony. Then resume your views of Turkey Roost! I forgot to include a pen or pencil in the container, and would appreciate the first finder to bring and leave one in the cache. Thanks.
05/24/2015 By Pixel Magic Renee and I identified our trailhead for this hike yesterday, but the weather was bad so we needed to return to make the search for this cache. The weather forecast showed a small window of opportunity early in the day today, so we went for it. We rose early to get to the area while the sun was shining. Woohoo. We found the cache just as promised and humbly signed in the first position.
This is our first time here and we've enjoyed our time and created memories of this beautiful place. The hike was a moderate adventure that has taken us up and over rolling hills to get to GZ. The rocks are amazingly beautiful and impressively big. The whole setting is worth the trip here. As I crossed back to return toward the trailhead I could already see powerful clouds building behind Peak 7580. We watched as the storms built up their strength and finally brought the continued rains of this past week.
Thanks for bringing us to this great spot. Now that we have tasted of the fruit of the garden, we need to return to enjoy more of the treats of the garden. Thanks, Denali41 for sharing your wealth of knowledge and expertise with newcomers like us. TFTC.
PS: Dropped off pen.
