Benchmark
Certificate of Accomplishment

This cache is located near the Royal Gorge Bridge west of Canon City. It is off of Highway 50, Royal Gorge turn off. It is in a City owned park area and goes through some BLM property.
After you turn off of Highway 50, turn left at a dirt road with the coordinates N 38 27.950, W 105 18.349. Proceed to coordinates N 38 27.779, W 105 17.665. This is the trailhead to get to the virtual cache. It is a steel gate with enough room for 3 to 4 cars to park in the immediate area.

You will follow this utility road most of the way to the cache area. Look off to the right occasionally and you will get some kick ass views of the Arkansas River and Canyon. The road ends between two com towers.

Follow the primitive trail to the virtual cache. The virtual cache is a benchmark set in rock at the summit. There are 4 characters above the word "Elevation". Please email me these 4 characters or a pic to verify your visit. Also, my elevation does not agree with what is on this benchmark (see pic). Does anybody else get something different??????

It is an approximate 2 hour, 3 mile round trip if you aren't in a big hurry.

 Hints

When the road ends between the two com towers, go to the shorter tower and look about thirty feet east of the fence for the primitve trail. The trail will almost dissapear somtimes so if you lose it, back up and look around to pick it up again.

First I need to apologize for the long log, but I have had people from all over the world tell me that they would like to have seen more in our logs, not only about their cache specifically but more on the amazing journeys that we take and haven't documented well in the past. Now, if you would like to skip to information that is specific to the cache, please skip to the bottom to see there is anything helpful. Only 25% of the time do we provide something that we either didn't read in another log or something that we felt needed to be added for clarity or a nudge in the right direction.

This geocaching trip was two weeks and designed to make up for the six months that we gave up dreaming, wishing, designing, and building the GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit. TTO1 and I are two of the 4 "Builders" of the GPS Maze Adventures Exhibit, and Kiecker the third. All three of us cache together a lot, and this trip was no different. Kiecker didn't get the entire two weeks in with us but was with us a majority. It was extremely helpful to productivity on several caches that he had already found in some of the areas that we visited.

We started north from Dallas to Oklahoma, and the trip would find us at the end finding caches in nine States. Near the beginning, we had to stop for a daughter's college graduation in Denver. Boy, I despised that stop as I had to abandon my geocaching accoutre for something professional and "suitable," my wife demanded. So, the next day, I got her back taking her on caching excursion to the tree and snow line that started with a 22-mile dirt road trek. Sure glad we had the right vehicle for this portion of the trip. The rest of the trip we could have done fine with just a two-wheel drive.

One of the more memorable stops was again in South Dakota. We stayed up too late and had a great visit with not only the Famous SoDakZak but also with a group of cachers that we had just seen at the Maze. Just a great group of folks.

Several of the days we spent threading the proverbial storm needle. Unlike the other group, we were able to circumnavigate all the inclement weather. Just know, this was not by design. We have all the wet weather gear one could put on thinking that we would have to do most of this trip in torrential downpours. As luck would have it, just the vehicle got the brunt of the pounding rain on a couple of the longer driving leg of our sojourn.

Another new thing we tried this trip was to do like we see a lot of folks are doing with videotaping. We love the longer hikes, extremely lonely caches, and higher rated caches. Adrenaline junkies, we aren't, as we carry a lot of safety gear just in case, but in the end, we found that we suck at it. We are hoping to find someone that will join us on our trips that is a good videographer and doesn't mind the >10Km hikes with 1200 ft elevation change and being 65-100 feet up in a tree. Till then we will just take and post pictures.

We would be remiss if we didn't thank all the geocachers that in some way added to this game/sport/hobby/obsession with their individual hides and varying levels of effort that they put into their geocaches. We don't award a lot of favorite points but this trip had inordinate amount given compared to previous trips. We also ended up on this trip making two remarkable achievements of our own - even if we do say so our selves. 25k finds and 2nd Original Fizzy Loop. We did have ambitions to beat our old record of counties in a day but the weather and flooding were not going to allow that to happen.

Here below is the aforementioned area where we provide relevant information specific to this cache:

We were also able to find two nearby benchmarks are on this trek. One was not easy to get to but still there. Pictures being upload later this week.

Favorite of the day so far. Mostly because of the hike, 2 rattlesnakes and out running the lightning on the way back to the car. Tftf

Definitely glad that we took the time for this one. The last bit was somewhat steep but worth the exertion. Got some great views. We couldn't seem to locate the right disc with the digits so my picture will be uploaded. A storm was blowing in and definitely did not want to get stuck in it. We saw 2 rattlers on the way out. One small one and one small adult that was none too happy with us disturbing him on the trail. TFTF

Greeting from Indiana - USA - God Bless our police officers, fire fighters, and our military

Thanks for the cache (TFTC). Logs will be stamped with stamp of Indiana and Dennis and Lana, unless log is small then will put D&L to save space: or will write DennisandLana or D&L - took a work assignment in Pueblo for a few months and want to grab caches and hope to meet other geocachers - when I come home on the weekends - I am trying to grab caches on my wanted to get done list - today we are caching with our geodogs

We will send answers and/or proof of qualifications to challenges or earth caches within 24 hours or as soon as we return for internet service.

We appreciate the cache owner (CO) maintaining

Found while here visiting the area from Australia.
We’ve spent the last few weeks travelling from Las Vegas and now we’ve arrived in Colorado.
Today we’re heading towards Canon City to stay the night.
Along the way we stopped in at Royal Gorge Bridge for a look. I’d earmarked this cache to do before leaving home so we went for the walk to it this afternoon.
Today there was plenty of wind and it was cold. We’re from Queensland in Australia, and we don’t get winter this cold what so ever so this is all a new experience for us. But also a lot of fun.?
We parked down near the campgrounds and enjoyed the walk, we saw some fantastic views along the way.
The last little push to the top was steep but we made it no problems. From the top the views were just amazing. We could see even see Pikes Peak so we were pretty wrapped with that.
We’re giving it a favourite point because we enjoyed it and also we hope it encourages other to visit as well.
Thank you for bringing us here.
We loved our visit!
Cheers from Australia

I had a very enjoyable two days of cache-finding in the Canon City area, focusing on certain challenge caches, the three Virtual caches I still needed as I work my way toward finding all of Colorado's still-active virtuals (I'm getting close!), and making some fun hikes for some back-country caches that were of specific interest. I satisfied all of my objectives on the trip, and look forward now to proving up my qualifications on the challenges and logging my finds.

I was delighted with the caliber of geocaches in the area--some creative hides, some very well-maintained caches, and many containers loaded with nice swag and TBs and geocoins, etc. It's rare these days to find such a concentration of well-cared for caches. The three Virtuals were special, too! I'm grateful for the experiences. Thank you!

I discovered while in the area that I had bitten off more than I had time for in order to find all of the caches I had hoped to. Fremont Overlook was a top priority, so I made certain to budget the time needed for this nice hike to a marvelous view setting. It was well worth it! Thanks for creating and keeping this Virtual "alive" through all these years, Canon River Rats.. Virtual caches are real treasures, and I have great respect for COs who keep them active! And this one is special, and gets a Favorite point from me. My answer is being emailed right now.
