The Chef

'Tis a sad note that says the Original Ammo Can with the logs of Yore has been muggled. Through the cooperative effort of some very fine Coloradoan Cachers. The final is now in good shape and it includes the instructions where you can satisfy your Caching Sweet Tooth, with some Dessert on the Mountain.
1

One of the pleasures of being a Chef is the ability to create some exciting dishes to please the palate. And the same principle can be applied to caching.

  • Menu - A Virtual story that will tell you where the appetizer is served.
  • Appetizer - A Micro that whets the appetite.
  • Salad - Four Small items that really starts to enhance the experience of this dish.
  • Chefs Special - A Traditional entree that will leave you satisfied.
  • The Dessert - A special 5 star delight that is ready for the hardcore Cachers.

To find this special entree you will have to analyze the menu and answer the questions. When you have solved the questions the location of the Appetizer will be revealed to you. And after you have consumed this very small dish you will know how to find the salad. And when that is done you will be ready to find the Chef's Special. And the dessert will only be available to those that have consumed this meal.
To order this meal go to the main coordinates and have a talk with the Sailor who served on the USS Arizona BB39.

Virtual Stage in 2005 and 2017

From the sailor to the place of the other 15 Vets go A B . C° a distance of 0 . D E miles. But before you depart take a short stroll across the playground and find the big gun. How many lugs are there on the hubs of this carriage?

  • A = Number of Northern shelter.
  • B = Total number of lugs / 5.
  • C = Total number of lugs - [# of South Shelter * 8]
  • D = [Sailors age in '41 / Sum of shelter #'s] - [# of North Shelter]
  • E = Total number of lugs / 4
Answer check should equal (# of Lugs - Time in Service of the Sailor).
Cache update May 2016
When you arrive at the old solution for the dough boys. Head East 149 meters, and South 311 meters so you can glean the necessary information. And this location will be used to find several memorials that will be used in the 2017 virtual.

When you have formulated the projected waypoint go to the other memorial that is near several flag poles and there you will find the data to complete the following table.

# -Birth- -Death- -Age-
1 1893 1918 ____
2 ____ ____ ____
3 ____ ____ ____
4 ____ ____ ____
5 ____ ____ ____
6 ____ ____ ____
7 ____ ____ ____
8 ____ ____ ____
9 ____ ____ ____
10 ____ ____ ____
11 ____ ____ ____
12 ____ ____ ____
13 ____ ____ ____
14 ____ ____ ____
15 ____ ____ ____

Location of the Appetizer !
HDDD°MM'SS.S"
Latitude Calculations:
  • DD° = Age of oldest doughboy + [# of Lugs - 12] + A
  • MM' = Mean age of Doughboys + A
  • SS. = # of Lugs on northern rim + length of service time of the sailor
  • .S" = Total # of lugs / [# of South Shelter * 5]

Longitude Calculations:
DDD° = [BB number of ship that the sailor served on * 3] - [Total # of lugs - 8]

MM' = Age of sailor when he enlisted in the Navy.

SS. = BB number of ship - mean age of doughboys.

.S" = There are two dough boys in the list of 15 and their respective ages only appear once when you are doing your calculations. Subtract the younger age from the older age to determine the .S"

After you have solved the menu,
sight down the bore to see where you will go.

Once you have parked, follow the old road.
Soon you will find a fork in the trail,
ignore the arrow and think,
would Tahosa give you a nature walk
or a uphill run.

Swing to the left and up we go,
Walk to the high sign and swing to the right.
Skirt the deadfall and as you cross the draw,
the appetizer will be low and to the right.

Return to the high sign and follow the path,
even though the arrow says go up, up, ignore it.
Continue on the trail as it meanders up the hill.
The approach to the salad will be from the East.

Return to the trail, and search for the Yucca.
Soon you will pass the Sage, who is not old or wise.
When it starts to level out swing to the right,
And get ready to find another part of this cache.

Now you must find the bench, where you can rest.
And after the bench get ready for the fight.
Then its on to the view, and soon your meal will be done.

When you find the micro please leave the informational tag there for the next cacher. And please do the same when you find the ingredients for the salad.
Thank You.
If you are unsure of your calculations E Mail the solution and I will try to give some assistance. Cache on and have fun.

Finally! I think this was my 5th hike working on this cache, plus the time I spent on the menu in town. First hike I had other priorities, and just found the appetizer. Second and third hikes were spent finding the lettuce. Fourth hike I made it to the entree, but couldn't find it. Today I re-found the dressing to re-check my coordinates for the entree. Made some small changes, but really it was just luck that I spotted the container. Close to where I had looked before, just hadn't been thorough enough. This was the first of 3 Tahosa caches for the day.

Nice late fall day. Forecast was for snow higher up, so I changed my plans and hiked closer to town. Alternated between sunny and warmish, and cloudy and windy and cold. Saw a few flakes falling near the end of the hike. Cache was in good condition, got the info to start the Dessert now. I meant to leave a geocoin, but got halfway down the mountain and realized it was still in my pocket. Oops. Had lunch after making the find and headed back down, this was as high as I needed to go today.

Plodded up the mountain for a third attempt at this one today, but still can't find it. I'm not trying again unless someone who's already found it is with me.

My goal today was this cache to earn my new souvenir! The CO helped me get my numbers and math straightened out (all of it was my haste and not reading things right) and the rest was right on target for the 4/4 rating. Of course, I probably took the toughest path possible to get to the final and the easiest route back to the trail. Then the trail kicked my butt and the hike took a couple of hours longer than I planned, which is no problem, just cut into my happy hour time! Cheers!

Armed with two sets of coordinates from Tahosa and Denali (interestingly 120' apart), I set off again to finish this multi, but again I was destined to starve. I searched both spots and in between, then started ranging farther afield. I finally had to give it up after an hour or so when I ran out of places to search within a reasonable distance. Either I'm in the wrong spot or it's well-hidden. In any event, I think that's it for me. I can't face that slog up this mountain a third time; it's just too hard. Oddly, it took me just as long to get down as it did to get up, but I'd gone on to Stone Mt and was utterly exhausted by the time I made it back to the car.

Kenyansherpa and I hiked Round/Sheep Mountain today with Denali41's "A Golden Dozen" being the common objective for the two of us. Doug though had never been on the trail and he was able to log some really nice caches today including this one. We found all stages to be in fine order and the final container to be right where it had been when I found it in September 2012 (though minus the ammo can totally amazing it dissapeared). I suspect the difficulties for the previous DNF loggers was in their approach to determining the final coordinates from the information in The Dressing. So all is well with this one!

In light of Path Pacer's DNF note, I'd point out that this is a tough "final" to locate, and snow would certainly increase its difficulty! But a team that includes a previous "Finder" of this cache is hiking up Round Mountain on May 7th to get the sweet finish on my Golden Dozen challenge. Because of this DNF, they will certainly detour off their route to the final location of Chef's Special in order to check on its status.

I think we had the correct location, but the snow made searching the rocks too dangerous. Next time!

Well, this was my third hike up the trail looking for items in the Special, and since I finally made it to the final location (I think) I figure I have earned a DNF. Found all the salad ingredients today, but had no luck at the entree. There were only about 5,000 places a cache could have been, so not too surprised I couldn't find it. Likely I made it too complicated, that is the usual cause of DNFs for me. Thanks for the fun hikes anyway, have at least one more to go.

Well I finally found the final stage! I've been working on this one for months! I'm happy to report that all stages are in mint condish! Loved this geocache! Thanks so much!

Recently I received a note from a cacher who was unsuccessful in finding the "Lettuce" stage of this wonderful Chef's Special series. He was concerned that it might be missing in action. Because I've been maintaining Tahosa's caches in Colorado while he's living in Arizona (SOON TO CHANGE__THEY WILL BE RETURNING "HOME" IN 2015!!!), I scheduled a trip up Sheep Mountain with my puppy Orizaba and some long-term hiking/climbing friends, so I could check on this stage and do maintenance on my own caches near the top of this mountain.

The Lettuce container is fine: it's in its proper place and is in "near-new" condition. It's a challenging stage, so make certain that you budget sufficient time for finding it!

Pixelmagic and I made the trek up the Round Mountain Trail and replaced the missing "dressing" stage that we found missing on our last visit. We also were unable to locate the ammo box at the "entree" final stage. The alternate container we prepared on the last trip was there, so the cache is now is a "ready to be found" status.
