From Valley View Hot Springs a trail leads up to the old Orient Mine and Bat Cave...from there an old railroad bed travels north to access the Rio Grande National Forest. The cache is at the Black Canyon trailhead. Like most of the trails into/up these mountains, Black Canyon is about a 4.5 mile climb up to 12,500 ft on the crest ridge...elevation gain is about 3,500 ft so it's for the hefty :)I've lived in Colorado most of my life and have only just discovered the Sangre de Cristos and San Luis Valley...I hope more folks come round here to enjoy this place!
At the Black Canyon trailhead here's a good log for sittin to take in the view, and some ruins to I have no idea what...check them out! If you look to the north, you’ll see the ever-astonishing collegiate peaks…and to the west, the San Luis Valley and the Lagarita mountains which are part of the San Juans
The cache is a bit bigger than a film canister...so log only really...please bring your own pen. I called it Fortune Cache cause there’s a fortune on the first page of the log, it’s always been one of my favorites! This is snow-friendly if it's less than about 2 ft...please pick up any rubbish you see along the way :)
04/25/2016 By Dean & Chris This one was an ordeal to get to the Black Canyon Trailhead. We had no idea that it took us so long to get to the location. The cache was fairly easy to find. The black string was gone. The ruins got us curious. Tftc. The views were awesome even on a hazy (or sandy) day.
