Beautiful old Ghost Town.  Thank you to the Buena Vista Heritage Organization for making such a great place accessible to visitors!! Please be respectful and do not go on private property. This cache is easily accessible without the need to cross fences or trespass on private property surrounding the location. The town was at its peak in the 1890s, when it included a telegraph office, general store, town hall, 5 hotels, saloons, dancing halls, a newspaper office, and a school house. The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad line ran through St. Elmo. There were 150 patented mine claims within the area. The majority of the people who lived in St. Elmo worked at the Mary Murphy, Teresa C., The Molly or the Pioneer Mines. The Mary Murphy Mine was the largest and most successful mine in the area. The Mary Murphy Mine recovered over $60,000,000 worth of gold while it was in operation. While the other mines eventually shut down, the Mary Murphy Mine continued to operate until the railroad was abandoned in 1922.

Make sure to check out the Town Hall and Jail House.  Do you see the little kid ghost peeking out from behind the curtains of the second floor in the building behind you? Hundreds of hummingbirds in the spring/summer/fall.  HUNDREDS of chipmunks that you can feed with the .50 cents a bundle of seed.  Lots'o fun!!  Make sure to find the "E" punch in the cache box and stamp your passport.

This area offers interesting history and stunning views all year but if you have the chance visit it in the fall when the aspen are turning.  The golden colors along the road and on the mountain side are just amazing.

TFTC, Met Terry O'Day and had a wonderful conversation. He's been visiting St Elmo for 66 years and had a nice set of stories about the town.

What a great cache, making St Elmo even better. We enjoyed feeding the chipmunks and drinking juice . We even saw a deer chilling under one of the house decks. TFTC
