Off the beaten trail hike!

nickgatt's 7 day Geo-Slump Hike

This cache started out as a challenge cache, but I changed it to a traditional to make it more accessible. My thanks go to Alpine Reviewer for taking the time to discuss the pros and cons.

I copied denali41's description of the terrain from his nearby cache: This is a strenuous off-trail hike on steep terrain from your parking spot along Colorado Highway 14 in Poudre Canyon. Approximately 450 feet of elevation gain is necessary, involving considerable bushwhacking. There is an abundance of prickly pear cactus and thorny bushes, so be careful!

At the time this cache was placed, my longest geo-slump was 7 days:

Congratulations to Memfis Mafia and geo Tom for FTF!

I gave this one a decent look but couldn't come up with it. I didn't realize it had been almost 3 years since the last find until I looked at the logs to see if it would help with the search.

Bucky & I weren't able to find this one on a spectacular day of caching! It was a beautiful day, with a temperature in the mid-50s in sunny skies. Perfect for this time of year! Approve

We first headed up to Loveland before sunrise, to finish a couple of the virtuals there, then it was over to Bobcat Ridge, and a little hike to get the blood moving, then finally we headed up the Poudre Canyon to finish out a couple of toughies that I've been meaning to log for quite awhile. Didn't get back to Ft. Lupton until after dark, but it was well worth it!

It was getting late in the afternoon when I got here and parked the truck alongside the road. Pushed up the hill and made the challenge cache at the top in a little over a half hour. Tried for this one on the way back down, but after about a half hour of looking without success, I had to get going since I was losing the sun.

I hope I can get back here some time and give it another look.

Did some caching in Poudre Canyon today and I gave this one a go. I trudged up the steep slope to GZ and was surprised by the fact that there wasn't the one obvious place the cache would be hiding. Just the opposite, there were many, many potential places for it to be. After about 20 minutes of turning rocks I finally found the little rascal. As Denali41 said, it is amazing that it survived the fire as everything in the area was toasted. Had planned to drop a TB but the two I had wouldn't fit in the container. Thanks for the hide nickgatt.

I was in the area this morning doing post-fire maintenance/status checks on three of my caches, so I took the time to hike over and find the 7-day Geo-Slump cache. I had earlier promised nickgatt that when I did the maintenance checks, I would have a cache container along to replace this one if his original hide had been toasted by the High Park Fire. As I came close, it appeared that that would be the case--everything in the vicinity had burned, including the shrub that was immediately adjacent to the cache. But the cache had survived, and the log was in perfect condition! It was somewhat difficult to find, because burned black soil had migrated downslope and covered it (beneath the few hide rocks). I signed the log as STF.

I would like, someday, to witness a memfis mafia FTF dance (see his FTF note). I wonder what it might entail! Earlier this year Pixel Magic and Cacheman48 had a special FTF celebration on a multi cache (St. Brendan the Navigator Multi) that begins only 0.7 mile from nickgatt's Geo-Slump cache. Their celebration was captured by video, and the link to that video is provided on the multi's cache page. I wonder how memfis mafia's celebratory dance compares...?

Thanks for this cache!

FTF.Got to do my FTF dance on a mountain for the first time. Found this with geo Tom. We both really enjoyed the area. We made the terrain about a 6 by hiking directly from the car to the cache. Really enjoyed this one. It's a great change from the urban caches I've been doing lately.
