Maritime Signal Flags

International code/ signaling flags are used to signal between two ships or between ship and shore. The flags have distinct colors, shapes and markings which used singly or in combination have different meanings. The flags include 26 square flags, which depict the letters of the alphabet, ten numeral pendants, one answering pendant, and three substitutes or repeaters.

Only a few colors can be readily distinguished at sea. These are: red, blue, yellow, black, and white; and these cannot be mixed indiscriminately. You will notice, for clarity, the flags shown are either red and white, yellow and blue, blue and white, or black and white; besides plain red, white, and blue.

They can be used to spell out short messages, or more commonly, used individually or in combination they have special meanings. Strung end-to-end, and hung bow to stern from the rigging, they are used to dress the ship for ceremonial and festive occasions. Slightly revised over the years, they are recognized by all nations and still play an important role in naval and merchant shipping.

Inspired by the work MCF2000 did as a National Parks WebRanger!

I solved this several months ago when I planned a trip to Staunton. While coming back from Staunton State Park, I grabbed a few geocaches on the way home. I was a little concerned that this one would be buried beneath the snow. But how hard could it be to find a regular sized container in a snow drift? :)
Luckily there was not a drift at the GZ. The cache was camoed, but not covered in snow. Aside from a nearby barking dog, it was a beautiful stroll in the snow covered meadow. Cool swag in the container. I stamped my name and headed back to the FJ. TFTC!

Solved the puzzle last week.
The cache was a quick find and exactly at GZ.
Thanks for puzzle and cache.

Pretty bummed about this one. Spent a ton of time solving the puzzle on my phone, and a good 35 minutes spent trying to figure out how to navigate to the closest road to the waypoint. Coordinates checked out correct on geochecker. Ground Zero was open space and dead grasses, so I don’t know where it could be hiding.
