Green Mountain Trails Topo
Spoiler 1
Spoiler 1b
Spoiler 2
Spoiler 2b
Spoiler 3

All distances are as the crow flies. A topo map of the area and a compass would be very helpful. Expect at least a mile hike one way with some nice 'n steep sections.
Forget about following the arrow on your GPS for this cache. This might be easiest to do on a clear day when the city is visible, but it's doable most anytime. I would be cautious to avoid lightning, as the trails are all exposed with no cover, but there are wonderful views of the city pretty much the entire way.

Our GPS was on Magnetic North with a ten degree East variance. You can (and should) adjust yours accordingly.

Parking is available close to the start point, but can be a little tricky to get there.

To make it a little easier, the 'virtual' waypoints are now at trail junctions. After the first waypoint, we recommend taking the road less traveled: take the uphill path to get a good view of Denver!

Finally, a few tips that, combined with some lateral thinking, will make things a bit easier:
*Don't forget a pen and paper to write down useful info.
*Don't mark over your waypoints. Save each waypoint as you find it. They will come in handy!
*Projection isn't necessary, but it couldn't hurt anything either.
*Study up on your GPSr's settings, units, etc. Standard units aren't necessarily the most precise option you have.
*We're nice, helpful people. Take advantage of it.

Update: 3/8/11
The waypoints are no longer microcaches, but with the information below that was provided at each waypoint, you can treat them as virtuals along the trail to point you to the final.

The listed coordinates are Waypoint 1.
From WP1 to WP2:
Bearing: 261° (4651 Mils)
Distance: .34 miles (550 meters)

From WP1 to Final Cache:
Bearing: 214° (3809 mils)

From WP2 to WP3:
Bearing: 207° (3683 mils)
Distance: .29 miles (473 meters)

From WP2 to Final Cache:
Bearing: 175° (3114 mils)

From WP3 to Final Cache:

Hiked up Green Mountain this morning with geodog and geokid. I believe this cache is gone. Ground zero had me in the burn scar from the last year's fire. I'll send my coords to the CO to verify. Enjoyed the nice walk.

Eloise (my "balloon animal" dog) and I had a great walk on Green Mountain today. I had a pretty solid idea of the destination from the information on the cache page but you never really know how accurate Mapsource is going to be until you put boots (and paws) on the ground. As it turns out my coords were within a foot or two and I made the find very quickly.

This area will be seeing more of me, and vice versa, on my bike. This looks like just the area to get back into better shape for riding.

I was hoping I had this calculated correctly. Learned some fancy tools with Google Earth to help. I was coming up to get Green Mountain 2 and decided to hit this on the way back to see if I did it right. Success!!! Got the Green Jeep TB to go along with the find. TFTC.

I've had a number of puzzle caches solved for awhile in the Longmont/Boulder/Denver area but haven't taken the time to make the drive to find the finals. Today I decided to put some miles on the vehicle and head that way. I left my home in Loveland and headed down 287 to Longmont. From there it was on to Boulder, then a stop for a nice hike on Green Mountain in Lakewood, then Englewood, Northglen, and back to Loveland. I logged some really nice caches today but I have many more I didn't get to.

After finding the caches I was after near Boulder I headed south for Green Mountain. I had plotted this one out a couple months ago and the view from Google Earth was promising. I parked at the trailhead and hoofed it on up the hill. When I got about 50 yards from GZ my "Low Batteries" alarm went off. Oh #$%#$, my spares were in the truck! I hurried closer to GZ and at about 20 feet away my screen went blank. It sure didn't give me much warning before quitting. Thankfully my coords were spot on and I found the container in the first place I looked. Thankfully those batteries didn't die sooner! Signed the log and then headed for the "oldie" on the mountain. Thanks greengineer and uberquandary for this challenging plotting exercise!!!

Puzzler felt confident that he had coordinates close enough for us to find the cache, but we could not come up with it. We are sure we will be back some day to give it another try.

My target was the old cache near the summit then I noticed another old one and this multi! I love smart phones and technology. While waiting at the Post Office I quickly solved for WP2 and WP3. Finding where the bearings intersected wasn't as easy. I eyeballed them first for a general area, then did a few things (not spoiling my method), and got the coords for my ground zero. I e-mailed the CO to see if I was way off and it turned out I was fairly close. Sissadies had cache in hand quickly once we arrived. We left a Green Jeep Proxy. Also confirmed with a previous finder but the CO was fast! Thanks, fave.

I've been studying this one for a while and decided to get this last GM cache of my list. Paper and field calcs didn't work too well for me, so I contacted the CO from the side of the trail and he helped me make the find. Now, I need to figure out my error. A great morning for a hike and the trails were getting busy on my way down. Cache is in good shape. Thanks!

7:42am Gevonden!
This cache caught my attention as it had not been found in w while.

I had done the calculations from home and contacted the co to see if I was close. I was not. I realized my mistake and my second attempt was within 5 feet.

The hike is nice in the evening and at gz it was a quick search before I found this cache in great condition

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.

There have been a few times I was extremely happy to have a smartphone with me while geocaching, and this was one of them. I set out for Green Mountain today in hopes of finding this one, but the coordinates I wound up with put me in the middle of an open area with no place nearby to hide a cache. I broadened my search area to a radius of about 100-150 feet, but no luck. I gave up and was walking back to my car when I got an e-mail. (I had e-mailed the CO before I went out in hopes of verifying my coordinates, but I thought they looked good, so decided to get moving.) Anyway, I was a little more than a half-mile away when I got the e-mail saying my coordinates were actually fairly close. I turned around and right away, found the cache in a spot I must have looked at a couple of times during my search. CO, thanks for your help, and thanks for a really cool multi - it gets a favorite point from me!
