This cache is part of a series dedicated to the important documents that have established our country and allowed the United States of America to be a great nation. The “Bill of Rights” is part of the United States Constitution. The Constitution is considered a “living” document, meaning that the rules can be altered or eliminated, and new ones can be added. The constitution outlines how to make those changes. The Bill of Rights mostly describes the rights afforded to us as citizens.
The Sixth Amendment of the Bill of Rights protects us during a criminal trial. It allows us to have a lawyer, to hear the evidence, and know who has accused us of a crime. We are afforded a trial soon after we have been charged. We can call our own witnesses.
Article VI (Amendment 6 - Rights of Accused in Criminal Prosecutions)
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
