Total roundtrip distance is 3.5 miles or less over varying terrains, depending on your choice of access. The waypoints and geocache are all located on BLM lands. Higher terrain immediately south of the search area may restrict access to some satellites and thus affect the accuracy of GPS readings.
The geocache is located on BLM lands near the mouth of Kodels Canyon. Access the search area via BLM trails (park at the trailhead on Highway 340 about 100 yards uphill from the Kingsview Road junction. The search area is also accessible from Colorado National Monument via the old Fruita Dugway. Locate that route from the Historic Trails Overlook just above the twin tunnels inside the Fruita entrance, and follow the trail downslope to the boundary and BLM lands beyond. Either way, expect some moderate to very steep ascents and descents, but nothing technical or precipitous. Two preliminary waypoints lead to the geocache, which was originally stocked with a disposable poncho, light stick, match safe, rescue blanket, a fuzzy little owl thing and a logbook and pencils. The second waypoint requires solving a simple puzzle to determine geocache coordinates. During your search, you'll be poking around on the sloping back of a conspicuous monocline -- a geological structure whose strata were tilted upward in response to the forces that elevated the nearby Colorado National Monument above the Grand Valley. You'll also get a good workout and enjoy some marvelous views from your vantage point on the monocline.

This took two trips since I had to learn something about the GPS before proceeding to Stage 2. I put puzzle into plastic bag before replacing. One of the reference points on the puzzle was unreadable due to water damage, but puzzle is solvable with readable info. Final cache was in ok/not great shape and log was usable since it had been placed in a plastic bag. Lid for final cache was in pieces, so I moved cache about three feet to give it better cover and found a flat rock to cover it. TN LN SL. Really enjoyed the trek across varying terrain and the process of finding the final cache site. TFTC

Wow, what an adventure! Got stages 2 and 3 today, my biggest hiking day! Initially I decided to go right up the impressive rock spine, which was a lot of fun. I should have returned to get the final, as it got up to 99° and I underestimated the distance.
Cool but doable puzzles on this multi, which hadn't been found since 2012. Interesting and scenic geography. Coordinates are dead on. Lid for the final was in a few pieces, found a flat rock that almost fit. Baggy for log was in tatters, replaced it. Log is still very readable. T: Native American earrings L: Norse bar waitress

Found 1st stage, that's quite a hike along the historic trail! Especially when you climb too high, and have to backtrack 4/10 of a mile uphill. Beautiful vistas all the way, but next time out I think I'll come from Hwy 340 so it'll be downhill back to the car.

It was a beautiful day for hiking the canyons back here.
Found all three stages right where they were supposed to be. :)
Thanks for the fun cache and for the great hike; one that takes you through and over a variety of terrains.

Wow! Now that was a cool cache. I just wanted to go for a hike on the K series of trails and I turned on the iPhone and this popped up in my vicinity. I think I saw this cache before and thought I just didn't have time for a multi that day. Well, here I am again and the iPhone didn't have a good enough signal to get all the info, so I didn't quite know what I was looking for. Found the first stage quickly, second stage "oh, what have I got myself into?". Thought there might be a couple of ways to solve this, so I created 2 waypoints and the final was on the second one. I was actually shocked that I found it as I didn't know if I got it right on either one. Picked up a CD and left a nice flashlight for the people who might find this one near dark, as I did, and need a light to get home. Thanks! I'll say it again, that was way cool! Gave me an idea for a hide of my own back home.

Found first two waypoints and got to within .38 miles but a monument fence crew was about and I wasn't sure of the rout and I had white dog with me and didn't have my locals pass so I decided to try again next week.

We made it to the first waypoint, but couldn't figure out the "number puzzle." The hubby asked, "Are you going to admit we were too dumb to figure it out?" Yes...but we took a picture of the numbers (no pencil) and will work on it at home. Thanks for the (eventual) cache - kiagirl and Steve.

Got it at dusk! Excellent cache for route finding and determining distance. Can't believe last log was 11/08.
Zman nailed it after looking low. W/ kiki. Return to car in the dark. L frog - t diary. TFTC! SL

Thank you Hank Schoch for a very good cache. I have been wanting to find it for a long time. But for one reason or another, I didn't get it done until today. Eagle Creek and I managed it with only a few wrong turns, partly because I had scouted the route before when I hadn't the time to complete it. The whole thing was well laid out and cleaver. Thanks again. I took eyeglass cleaning cloth and left a whistle. SL
