Easy cache just off the road near a nice strong bridge.

This bridge held up remarkably well during the flood of September 2013. The water was roiling about a foot below the bridge deck, and you can see where some big trees and other various debris had bashed into the railing. At least one car was washed under this bridge, and ended up as a big crumpled ball of metal a couple miles downstream. Highway 36 towards Estes from here was under water, and Highway 36 towards Lyons was washed out and impassible. About 5 days after all that, when the big swirling lake that was the south end of Apple Valley Road drained a bit, the residents of Spring Gulch and X-Bar-7 to the north were able to finally leave their homes and return to civilization by crossing this bridge.

When I placed this cache a year and a half after the flood, the flagstone path was intact down to the cache location, but the rest of the path down under the bridge was still pretty wrecked. I don't know if there are plans to fix the old path, but I'm guessing that other projects are higher priority.

Day 3 of our family vacation. Spending some time in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, picking up a few caches along the way. This was our first stop on our way up. Quick find and all is well. TFTC SL
