This entire area doesn't have much of a mining history, which is why it doesn't look like Central City, but a few strong souls gave it a try. I haven't been able to find out much about this old mine, but best guess is it belonged to either the Sullivan brothers or mountain man Crosier. Both prospected here.

There are two different stories about Crosier. He was either an early hunter, trapper, and prospector; or he came from the base of Blue Mountain west of Carter Lake in Loveland, then moved to Drake to "run horses" for the US Cavalry on the mountain. Maybe both are true.

As late as 1977, you could still find the fireplace from his cabin not far from the trail, but the cabin from 1879 is long gone. I've spent years looking for that fireplace, but with no luck. I'll add to the gallery the map Bob Easterday marked to show its location. His map puts it at the head of True Gulch, but Bunnie (Bob's sister) said it was near the first big meadow you come to as you head up the trail (the one with "Drake's Dilemma" in it that she calls "Sullivan's Meadow"). Maybe you can find it!

I've been to the back of this mine. It's level, straight, and not that long. Be quiet though, as there are tiny bats sleeping on the walls. The greenish tint in some spots makes me think this was a copper mine, although gold is also known to be found with copper. If you continue up the trail, then head east before you reach Sullivan's Meadow, you'll find a couple of deep disclosure pits. Occasionally miners would blast out a pit to see if there was anything worthwhile under the surface.

This cache is part of a geotrail of historical caches in the Glen Haven area. Retrieve the code from all 14 caches plus the found date of the virtual and receive a commemorative geocoin. The cache list can be found here: Historic Glen Haven GeoTrail. And remember not to be a cache pirate! If you take something, leave something at least as good for the next cacher.

Oh man this was a bittersweet DNF. Really enjoyed the hike, loved the mine, and almost lost it at the cuteness of the bats that were present! Not sure if was just having some ugly GPS bounce, or if perhaps some snow in the area was upping the difficulty. Managed to get a GZ in the area, and after a long search, and even expanding the search area, couldn't come up with this one. Sometimes it's not the difficulty of the hide, but just me making it harder than it is as well. Still, enjoyed the experience overall, so thank you for the hunt! I can certainly see myself returning to give it another go sometime in the future.

Stopped and grabbed this one on the way back home after Knapps Knob and the Switchbacks. I have been up this trail many times and new the location of the mine well. I always thought there should be a cache up in that area. Glad we had good reason to take an extra hike! Thank you for the history and another great cache! TNLN_SL :-)

Hiked from Garden Gate TH across Crosier to Glen Haven. This was the first cache we did. Have passed by this mine before; thanks for placing a cache and providing history! I do my 'prospecting' in grocery stores these days. TNLN.

I remember hiking by this adit in the past and thinking what a nice place it would be for a cache - I'm glad you thought so too! Took a little time to zero in on this one, but persistence payed off and I was soon signing the log. Thanks for another stop on the tour!

Since my early days of geocaching Crosier Mountain and its surroundings, including the Glen Haven, the Miller Fork, and Dunraven areas, have held special allure for me. The caches by Tahosa and Sons on Crosier and Round Mountains initially captivated my attention, eventually resulting in my development of the Celtic Cross Tribute cache on Crosier. And of course Crosier is so large that the complex contains four distinct ranked peaks, augmented by the adjacent Triangle Mountain, all of which I had hiked up. My attraction to the area had also been nicely enhanced by Path Pacer’s earlier cache placements in the area, and I eagerly sought out each after the publications of her caches. So when this GeoTrail series was created I became excited! I had previously found six of the 14 caches on the geotrail and enjoyed reading the cache descriptions for the more recently published eight, including this one. Cumulatively a great synopsis of the history of the area, indeed.

Well, most of the new caches were published while the Big Thompson Canyon Highway was closed for renovation. To reach Glen Haven from Wellington using the detour through Lyons takes an extra 1 ½ hours round trip. So I decided to wait on getting after the eight remaining caches until the highway reopened. It did, but I was in Cincinnati at the Giga Geowoodstock Event when that happened. Today was the first chance I had to make the drive up the improved Big T highway and on to Glen Haven; I was accompanied by my puppies Orizaba and Chimborazo. We had a fun time chasing down seven of the eight new caches, and thinking about the historical themes associated with each. I had expected to also get up Triangle Mountain for the final cache of the geotrail, but the weather was not looking promising; that final adventure is reserved for a future date.

Thanks for this cache and thanks for this entire geotrail series, Path Pacer! I'm pleased to record the {FTF} on this nice cache!
