You’re on the rail bed of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad. This line, under the leadership of General Palmer, won the battle to cross the divide west to the mining districts of southwest Colorado in the late 1800’s. D&RG and the DSP&P rails were competing to cross west, the latter was a year behind D&RG which reached the west slope in 1882. This D&RG line south from Montrose to Ouray was completed in 1887 and was designed to meet with Otto Mears’ Rio Grande Southern RR (incorporated 1889 and completed in 1891) serving the mining districts to the south. *
This may be a cache for fair weather and dry roads, so take care. The additional waypoint is the best and partially graveled road to the destination. The hunt may not be exactly what you initially expect, so be careful in your search.
