Native American Tribes series.
Kawaiisu

The Kawaiisu are a Southern California Native American tribe who are well known for elaborate basketry, culture and rock art. The name "Kawaiisu" was given to the tribe by neighboring people and over the course of academic study has been the label that is most used. The Kawaiisu language is unique in pronunciation and structure and is maintained amongst tribal members to this day. It has been recorded in a grammar and dictionary text produced by the University of California, Linguistics Division, in 1991. The State of California has designated an historic park, called Tomo Kahni, at the site of one of our larger villages, near Tehachapi. This site has extensive rock art and numerous grinding holes. The State of California is currently negotiating to acquire three other Kawaiisu rock art sites for state parks, one at the Antelope Valley Indian Museum near Palmdale, one near Rosemond and one at San Emigdio, directly south of Bakersfield. There are also extensive Kawaiisu village rock art sites at two local military installations: Edwards Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Center. These two can be viewed on private tours.

The Kawaiisu are unique amongst indigenous people because we have no migration story. From an anthropological standpoint, this means we have always lived in the same place. Even some of the most studied of the ancient civilizations in the America’s, for example the Aztec, have a migration story that was passed down to each generation thru oral history. This lack of a migration story explains why the Kawaiisu territorial pictographs are often pre-dated by adjacent petroglyphs and geoglyphs. The combination of Kawaiisu pictographs and petroglyphs verify that our tribe has lived in this region since time immemorial.

I was skiing at Copper Mountain on Saturday and headed back to the airport at the end of the day. I was hoping to catch an early flight since I arrived early - but, flights were sold out so that left me some time to grab a few caches in the area.

The road shoulders were a muddy mess and the wind was blowing like crazy and it was colder than I anticipated.

After grabbing a handful, I decided to head to the airport and wait in the warmth for my flight.

Thanks for making these available for people like me that are waiting on flights.

Still working on a county run. Today I had a few counties in south east Wyoming and across the border into Nebraska to pick up. Then I headed back to Denver for my flight back. I had extra time so I cached around the airport some more picking up a lot of Mondo caches. I signed the logs as FeatheredFriends or as "FF" on the smaller logs to save space. This was my '75th' find for today. Thanks 'mondou2' for a fun time in the area.

Oh the attraction of a souvenir to a geocacher!! Curse you geo marketing people for doing your job so well. Evidently this great adventure has been going on for weeks, but in true form PayMeCache waits until the 23rd hour to call me up and say “let’s do this”….so we did. We knew we wanted to crank it out, so the plan was to hit an area concentrated with easy finds, unfound by both of us. Well we all know about best laid plans….our first couple of hours had their struggles, but the good news is if we weren’t quickly finding geocaches, we were laughing until it hurt and enjoying the adventures the universe was throwing at us. We eventually got our groove on and cranked out 80 or so finds for the day. My one piece of advice when caching just south of the airport….stop to watch the planes fly over. It was an amazing experience and the best part for me was watching the HUGE plane shadows sailing over the fields and right over our heads. TFTC

The things we do for silly souvenirs...

I took a day off to try and bag as many of these souvenirs that I will forget by tomorrow. That being said heh324 joined forces and is chauffeuring us around. The heat is exhausting but we are getting through it one by one.

Some may call me seriously mentally ill. Some may state that I am in a state of mind that prevents social interaction. Some may say I am in a state of mind that prevents normal perception and or behavior. I prefer to say that I tend to do the same thing over and over again, but I expect different results. That being said, I believe we only live one life and I am trying to make the best of it. I thank you, mondou2 for placing a fun geocache to fuel my "insanity" or addiction as I call it. I appreciate you bringing me here so that I can try and sign my alias on a piece of paper that you have hidden.

I look forward to finding more of your geocaches. I also look forward to potentially finding geocaches with you one day and sharing stories of our insanity... I mean hobby or addiction? Cheers!
