Mr. Burns

Ahoy, hoy! A Simpsons-related cache in South Boulder
The first in a planned series of caches relating to Simpsons trivia. This one should be a snap for true Simpsons fans.

The given coordinates are within 200 yards of the cache. These are given merely to indicate a general location; there is no need to visit this spot.

First, determine:

# of hairs on Homer's comb-over = X1 ____
# of Simpson kids (not counting Bart's evil twin) = X2 ____
# of letters in first name of the school bus driver's name = X3 ____
# of letters in first name of the owner of the Kwik-E-Mart = X4 ____
# of letters in first name of Bart's best friend = X5 ____
# of letters in first name of Homer's favorite bar owner = X6 ____
# of letters in first name of Mr. Burns' gofer = X7 ____
# of letters in first name of either of Marge's sisters = X8 ____
# of letters in first name of the Springfield police chief = X9 ____

checksum = 40

Now, set your GPS to read decimal degrees (DDD.DDDDD)
Final directions to the cache will be found at:

LAT = FL.ANDERS

where

F = X7 - X2 ____
L = X6 + X7 ____
A = X4 x X6 ____
N = X3 + X4 ____
D = X5 + X3 - X4 ____
E = X5 + X3 - X7 ____
R = X5 - X6 ____
S = X9 - X6 - X4 ____

checksum F thru S = 48

and

LONG = -JOE.QUIMBY

where

J = X9 - X8 ____
O = X6 - X2 ____
E = X5 - X4 ____
Q = X3 - X1 ____
U = X5 - X3 ____
I = X1 + X2 ____
M = X9 / X7 ____
B = X7 – X1 ____
Y = X9 - X7 ____

checksum J thru Y = 22

(note there are 2 different E's)

The coordinates of FL.ANDERS and -JOE.QUIMBY will take you to a post with 2 signs on it. Walk about 80 feet in the direction of the top arrow to find the mini-micro log container. Mini log only, no mini pen. No mini donuts, either. Geo-tweezers might be helpful.

NOTES:
1. Absolutely no need to go on the highway
2. Watch for unexpected muggles
3. Cache container is about 6.5 ft. off the ground

Coords derived from the equations will get you to the exact GZ, not 150 feet off. None of the 66 other finders had a problem.

What does a party animal like me do on a Friday night? I call up my geocaching friends @2lablovers and @intrepiidexplorer and convince them to spend the night in Boulder, Colorado looking for hidden treasures. That's what I do! We wandered up here with a list of 28 caches. Most were on the west side of the city and a few were at NCAR. Started with an FTF and managed to grab a puzzle, a virtual, an earthcache, and many traditionals. We ended the the night with the virtual. By then it was around 10pm and time to migrate back toward Aurora. Five hours of caching fueled by Starbucks and McDonalds. La vida loca.
Puzzle was solved pretty quickly. But 2LL swear not to log it until they have solved it. So, only IE and I are claiming this one. But the find was not as quick as the puzzle. My coords were about 80 away from the host. But I'm horrible at math and extremely dyslexic. So I can't blame bad coords. We spiraled outward until we located the little guy. TFTC!

Found using geosenses and the hint rather than the coords since they put us about 150 feet off. Tftc.

Had to bring a friend along for the find. No trouble here today. Gotta love a fresh log to sign. Thanks for an interesting puzzle, which I had solved quite a while ago.

I almost missed this one, but before I gave up I decided to think a little more inside the box and AH HAH! This was my last find on a long bike ride that took me from my house north in Boulder down to Eldorado Canyon and back.
