Forty four peaks in Colorado have “Sheep Mountain” as a portion of or all of their official name. This cache is located near the summit of one of these 44. This particular “Sheep Mountain” has the following characteristics, among others:
It has an elevation of 7,555 feet.
It is accessible via a moderately steep off-trail hike to the saddle between Sheep Mountain and Point 7205, and thence south to the summit of Sheep.
Convenient parking occurs at the Narrows Campground in Poudre Canyon. A restroom is located at the parking area
Reaching the summit requires a fairly steep hike, entirely off-trail. Approximately 1,100 feet of vertical gain is required.
Most of the hiking terrain is forested, but the area at the top of Sheep Mountain is open and rocky. It provides interesting views, but it can be subject to strong uncomfortable winds!
It holds the official designation of a “ranked peak”.
An unofficial summit register is located at the actual summit, but the register can not normally be found when snow is present.
So........WHICH SHEEP IS THIS ONE?
If these characteristics (and the cache!) interest you, develop your plans for the hike to reach this mountain’s top and then search for the cache at the listed coordinates and sign its log. Also, sign the summit register (this is NOT the cache). The cache is near, but not at the true summit. The cache is a large Rx vial. It is placed in a small cavity of a vertical rock formation, and is covered by a small rock so it can’t be blown away. At the time I placed the cache, winds of 70-80 mph were blasting the summit of Sheep Mountain! Make certain that you replace the rock on top of the container after you’ve signed the log. A small shrub is rooted immediately adjacent to the hide. The specific location should be free of snow in most circumstances, so the cache is winter-findable for those seekers desiring a challenging snowshoe approach. Locating it might take some time, so be persistent. Be certain to bring a pencil or pen with you for your log-signing ceremony. At the time of cache placement, a pencil was included in the cache, but don’t count on it.
Have fun on this fairly difficult hike, and enjoy this nice cache and the special views you have from the hide location!
10/27/2013 By icezebra11 A year and seven months since the FTF and no one else had logged this one until today. I had come up short on another Denali41 cache not too far away so feeling frustrated, a steep climb was what I needed to shake that one off. I first climbed to nickgatt's 7 day Geo Slump cache and after signing that log, I headed for this one. Turns out I already had a fair amount of the steepest terrain covered getting to nickgatt's. Slowly made my way up to the top of this Sheep Mountain. After a little searching I uncovered the container and signed the log. Climbed the last few feet to the summit and signed the register too. Ate a sandwich and took some photos before heading back down to the highway. Thanks Denali41 for another great cache with great views!!
09/13/2012 By Denali41 Post-fire status/maintenance check. I made the hike up Sheep Mountain this morning through extensive stretches of charred but still-standing trees, expecting to find that the cache had been toasted. That expectation continued as I made the final approach in to the GZ vicinity. The fire had burned hotly to within a few feet of the cache, and I was anticipating a need to replace it. But wow, the close-in rocks protected the container and log and I found everything to be in perfect condition! It's ready for your search and find. Go for it.

03/29/2012 By Pixel Magic Woohoo! Sharing first to find with Cacheman48. Dick and Peter are out training for a special outing in May and needed to get in some elevation and fresh air. They got both today on a wonderful outing down the Poudre Canyon. We drove along the river till we got to the parking area and then quickly headed up and up and up. The views of snow capped peaks from the summit are gorgeous. While travel was off trail the hike was terrific.
Thanks to Cacheman48 for his company and help on this mini expedition.
