Native American Tribe Series

Okelousa

The Okelousa are Native American people originally from the Southern United States (Louisiana and Mississippi). The name is taken from the Chocktaw word for "black water." Their location when met by De Soto was apparently on the west side of the Mississippi River above Point Coupee.   De Soto described them as having "... more than 90 villages not subject to anyone, with a savage population, very warlike and much dreaded." The population at that time is estimated to have been around 10,000. By 1700 the estimate was down to merely 100. The cause of their population loss is unclear, but the survivors ultimately united with the Washa and Chawasha with the entire confederacy finally joining the Houma sometime in the 1800's.

Headed out with Joe Friday today with the goal of finding at least 100 caches to earn the Hidden Creatures souvenirs. It was a hot day, but we got it done. Almost all of the caches were quick finds, with containers in good shape and well maintained logs. Not sure how we had so many unfound caches about a half hour from home, but glad we did as it allowed us to get the souvenirs fairly easily. Thanks for all of the fun placements!
