We set out on this nice February day to attempt a little winter off roading in the mountains. First we headed for the Pinewood Reservoir area to check the nearby trails. This area is relatively low elevation and we figured the snow might not be a problem. As it turns out, we were able to make it fairly far up Pole Hill Road into the National Forest at a locked gate where the private property starts. There were some great vistas near this turn around area, so we placed this cache there.

To get to the cache site, take 18E past Pinewood Reservoir and keep going up hill past Quillan Gulch Rd after which you will enter the Roosevelt National Forest on NF-122. Note: You will see various private road signs on the way to the National Forest but you should have no problem passing through these roads to access the National Forest.

After exploring this area, we headed up to Estes Park and entered Pole Hill Road from the top end. To our surprise were able to do about 90% of the upper trail. There were a few challenging spots, one where we couldn't make it up a steep snow covered hill.

No ammo can for me--all I found at GZ was a rotting hammock :)

Had I noticed that it had been 3 years since last find, I may not have made the trek up, but it was a pleasant trip.

Went looking for the Veterans Monument Park and thought we would a fun cache. I also left a coin in the cache I had picked up a few weeks ago. TFTC

We weren't crazy about passing all the "Private Road" signs, but we figured with all the for sale signs up there we could always pretend to be looking for property! Besides, I believe what Tahosa (FTF on this one) said about this being a public right-of-way. After all, it is access to OUR Narional Forest land.

Thanks for getting us to this great spot and a BIG THANK YOU for a good 'ol fashioned hike and ammo can cache!

On the way to find this one we were turned back by the signs. On the third "No trespassing, Private Road" within the first 100 yards past the Fishermans Cove parking area, we decided they meant it. So we turned back. It looks like the road went private in the recent past (after the fire?). This one will have to be accessed through a different route.Private roads are an extension of the homeowners driveway and not to be messed with.

What a great cache in a great place. Thanks for bringing us up here. The GeoPups enjoyed it and we enjoyed it too. Rescued the TB since it's been up here almost a year. I wonder why more cachers aren't coming up to get this one. Hid a few caches on the way back down, so maybe with that we can get some folks up there. TFTC

Out killing some time in Loveland so decided to go see what the other end of Pole Hill looks like. Nice views, but the road is pretty tame. Too bad they allow people to put up gates. The National Forest should belong to everyone. Enough venting, Thanks For The Cache!
