"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"
"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" is the title of a song written by American folk rock singer Jim Croce. Released as part of his 1973 album Life and Times, the song was a Number One pop hit for him, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1973. Croce was nominated for two 1973 Grammy awards in the Pop Male Vocalist and Record of the Year categories for "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown".
The song is about a man from the south side of Chicago who, due to his size and attitude, has a reputation as the "badest man in the whole damn town." One day, in a bar, he makes a pass at a pretty, married woman, whose jealous husband proceeds to beat Leroy brutally in the ensuing brawl.
Inspiration His inspiration for the song was a friend he met in his brief time in the Army: I met him at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. We were in lineman (telephone) school together. He stayed there about a week, and one evening he turned around and said he was really fed up and tired. He went AWOL, and then came back at the end of the month to get his pay check. They put handcuffs on him and took him away. Just to listen to him talk and see how 'bad' he was, I knew someday I was gonna write a song about him.
Croce explained the chorus reference to Leroy Brown being "meaner than a junkyard dog": “Yeah, I spent about a year and a half driving those $29 cars, so I drove around a lot looking for a universal joint for a '57 Chevy panel truck or a transmission for a '51 Dodge. I got to know many junkyards well, and they all have those dogs in them. They all have either an axle tied around their necks or an old junk tire to keep 'em at least slowed down a bit, so you have a decent chance of getting away from them.”
I always enjoyed Jim Croce’s songs as they seemed so real to life. Hope you enjoy this cache which is a tribute to the man and his number one hit.

06/21/2019 By doctorpuck My first Colorado find! I stopped off at outdoor geek to pick up some gear and saw this popular little guy and had to check him out. What fun! I was scratching my head for a while before it dawned on me. Thanks for the cache!
03/27/2019 By COpackrat Beautiful day to be out caching. Thanks for the hide!
09/24/2018 By UsLaynes Made a quick trip to Denver for a car part and of course I included geocaching at all my stops along the way. My route took me through Wyoming on the way there with a few side roads for special caches and then return via I-70 through southern Utah. I only wish the days would have been longer so I could have found more finds.
I am trying to make sure I get a cache in all the counties around the Denver area, so I did make a few stops and detours on my way to the car part store. The part I needed was at a store very near this cache, thus I made sure to grab a find and mark where I went.
This was a fun mystery to solve. At first I could not figure out what I was looking for or where to start with this one. As I re-read the description, I had that A-ha moment and discovered the needed item. After returning the cache log and putting everything back, one of the employees came out and asked if I needed any help. I told her I found what I was looking for, and then mentioned that I found the cache. She walked away a little confused, but she did not seem concerned any more. FAV point is well deserved for this one!
