The Mermaid Who Haunts the Lake!

Warning ---

This is a true story and one only to be told at night. It is not for the faint of heart and should not be taken lightly.

Long ago, on a clear, crisp morning, a young girl named Eleanor Hemings ran away from home because she was severely mistreated by her overly meek Father and evil stepmother. She had brought with her a pair of vintage ice skates that were gifted to her by her Grandmother before she passed away. She cherished the skates more than any of her belongings because sliding on the ice offered her the freedom she could not experience anywhere else.

The girl traversed the iced over lake in her skates in attempt to gain travel speed in case anybody was out looking for her. When she crossed over half of the lake, alas the ice was thin and shattered. Eleanor fell through the ice into the frigid lake. Instant hypothermia paralyzed her. She drowned. Later that morning, as a snow storm moved in, temperatures dropped and the whole lake froze again, closing the gap the shattered ice had opened. Her body was never found. Legend has it that she became the Mermaid who haunts the lake because people passing by the area could always hear joyful singing voices at times but also horrifying shrieks and cries that would send shivers down your spine at other times.

As your working this cache be on the look out and if your lucky, or unlucky, as it may be, you might see her.

Unfortunately for me, I was unable to attend the "Fears" midnight event where event attendees were able to use the special temporarily activated cartridge to circumvent some special adventures in reaching the final destination of this great wherigo--the field log sheet! So I've waited and waited until circumstances allowed me to work through the wherigo cartridge in what I hoped would be a safe manner. You see, a significant "step" involves a nighttime excursion out to a zone located on a large lake/reservoir! I did not have access to a boat for this portion of the journey, so I patiently waited through the spring and summer and fall for the large water body to freeze solidly over this winter. But a problem "tested" my patience several times this winter: it's been unusually warm, and patches of open water appeared from time-to-time making what in a normal winter would be fairly straight-forward--a walk across ice to the cartridge zone--not so straight-forward at all! Stable, safe ice conditions have simply not been the case in the winter of 2017-18!

Recall that the mermaid in this regrettable story was in high probability Eleanor Hemings. Eleanor was skating away from an unfortunate family situation, zooming over thin ice and falling through and dying of hypothermia. Legend suggests she became a mermaid, a mermaid who has haunted her lake since her transformation from young lady to mermaid. Well, with the instability of the ice this winter I had no interest in testing this legend again. Besides, an elderly male would not a beautiful mermaid make! So I waited, and I waited. Then recently we had several days of very cold weather, including a couple of nights where the temperature dropped below zero degrees and barely reached day-time highs in the 20s. Sure enough, the reservoir ice thickened and appeared to be quite solid, so I took a chance to begin this wherigo journey in what I hoped would be a safe manner. It worked. This is another very well done, challenging cache put together by the creative owners of this CEGT series!! Thanks so much for all of these neat caches. I have only a couple more to do, and have worked through the solution coordinates for one (will get it after snow melts at its elevation) and have a good idea of what I need to bring for the other.

Catching up on my online logging. Found this cache with husband, animjason. We found these while we were up north visiting with my family, thanks!

animjason did all the heavy lifting for this one.

I love making and finding Wherigos, so this one caught my eye. I even try to keep a current bookmark of all Colorado ones.

Sissadies' brother was in town, so we headed north for a mini family reunion with him, her parents, and her grandma. To my added delight, there were three Wherigos within 5 miles. So we had to grab them all!

We had planned on attending the event at midnight, I got home from my prior commitments at 9:30pm, and then we totally spaced heading out at 10:30pm to make it :(

We missed all the fun! Luckily, I downloaded the event cartridge (not knowing what it was exactly). After lots of wandering around, we had that one figured out, and then did the others. Wish we could get three smilies LOL, our fault for missing the event.

Wait a minute, this is dejavu... maybe that was intentional? There are two mystery caches near us that have the same final. Made a call, and got corrected.

After waiting only one muggle here, we stealthily signed the log amongst the many who didn't forget to attend the event, and were on our way, thanks!!

Thanks CEGT! Logged The Mermaid Who Haunts the Lake from a seventh galaxy using c:geo!

Co-FTF with the midnight crew! Had a blast playing through this one, what a spooky story! The cartridge played perfectly on my iPhone, sounds and everything. Wherigo caches are one of my favorite types and this is a great example why! TFTC
