This cache was inspired by nearby The Old Ranch cache by Tahosa and Sons. This cache also requires some orienteering homework to solve. You would be wise to read up on Tahosa's cache before you try this one.
There is nothing at the main coordinates. FTF gets a pair of movie tickets and more.
Before GPSrs were around pathfinders navigated the woods with only compass, map and possibly a handheld altimeter. Several orienteering skills including a technique called resection were used to locate a hiker on a map. If you would like to test your path-finding skills then I challenge you to do this cache without using your GPS. You will need a 7.5m Topo map, map protractor, pencil and compass. Read the following story and then plot the cache location on your Topo map. Enjoy some more history when you park your jeep.

Once upon a time there was a cacher named n0wae who was driving his trusty jeep all over the 'Big Narrows' Topo map solving some grand Tahosa caches. He took the jeep road north towards Pendergrass Flats and stopped momentary to take a picture out the window. His altimeter read 7760 and he marked the spot as Point Delta.

n0wae was inspired by the history of the area and had so much fun finding Tahosa's caches and exploring the area that he planted one of his own after a short, easy and pleasant hike. n0wae took pictures of the cache location which is on a small map feature to help the pathfinders who follow.

  • Field bearing from the cache to Point Delta is 225°
  • Field bearing from the cache to the top of Mount McConnel (Sec 9) is 304°

This cache has been lonely much too long so today I decided to change that! This one has been on my must-do list for some time now but nature hasn't been too cooperative. I plotted the solution in 2012 but the High Park fire raged through the area that summer and that kept the area shut down until further notice. Then in September 2013, the torrential rains washed out number of places on the road and the Forest Service kept it closed for repairs until early October of last year.

The Forest Service did open the road at the beginning of the 2014 hunting season but I wasn't able to get into the area before it snowed and was closed again for winter. I had hiked into the area from Pingree Park Rd three different times in September 2014 to finish up the last 4 Tahosa caches I needed to complete Denali41's Tahosa Caches Challenge, but each time I was in there, I wasn't up to the extra milage necessary to log this one. I decided I'd wait until 2015 when I could drive to the general area.

I noticed on their website Monday 7/27 that the Forest Service finally opened Old Flowers Rd so I made plans to make the voyage to complete this cache today. I drove up to Old Flowers this morning and made my way to the old Lewis Ranch and parked there. I could have gotten closer but I wanted to get the exercise so I set out from there. I hiked through the charred landscape like I had done several times last fall. The grasses are amazingly high this year, some shoulder height in a few places. I made my way to my plotted GZ and discovered the area shown in the spoiler photos. My plotting had been about 85 feet off. But with the photos in hand, the cache was a quick find. The location had not been burned in the fire.

I opened up the log book to see that indeed, KingJR was the last person to sign in, nearly 5 years ago!! I also enjoyed reading Tahosa's and Corey's FTF log. Then I took in the great views all around. Yes, this cache is definitely Tahosa Bait and it is icezebra bait too! I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this cache. My only regret is not seeing the area before the fire ravaged it. Thanks n0wae for placing this cache and thanks TRR for keeping it going!!! The cache's secrets are safe with me.

Finally got all the way up here to this cache. Amazing view from this location!! I had to cut three trees from the trail to drive all the way in here, but it was worth it for the peace, solitude, and amazing view.

Thanks Eric for an awesome cache!

Almost made it to this one today, was a little nervous traveling in a single vehicle with no winch, so we decided not to visit this cache...which has been on my things to do list for over a year!! Guess it'll have to wait...

Hubby and I found your wonderful cache today after finding the Old Ranch and the Burl. We parked about a half mile from the cache and walked the rest of the way. Saw lots of wild flowers. We were about 30 feet off, but Hubby said if he was going to hide a cache it would be up here and it was. Just now as I was logging this find I saw the pictures of Jim pointing at the cache. LOL Anyway the view was beautiful and we left the camera in the truck. Thanks for the learning experience and for the cache. LNTN

Great cache! BigSmile Bucky & I came up to this one after finding The Old Ranch. We got here right as the sun was setting and were treated to a spectacular sunset! Smile

Completed the homework, and as you suggested, did this one without the use of my GPS receiver. With the map in hand, I knew I had it when I got to the first feature.

Stayed at the site until it began to get dark then walked back to the truck. Scared up a couple of mule deer plus a couple other things that snapped branches but weren't seen.

Thanks for the cache!! Cool

I guess you could call this Spivey's Bait, too. What can I say, I spotted the cache from its hiding place, but not with out help from the rest of the crew. I mean a lot of help. We decided very last minute to go for "the Vista" in order to get "kwbforest’s" last challenge (D/T combo) for the Fizzy Challenge. On the drive in, we noticed that this rare combo was posted on one of the 4x4 roads. Since this was my last D/T combo that I need for the Fizzy Challenge, well the team was willing to at least give it a shot. Like the other posts from the team have hinted at, we were not prepared for this challenge going in. To start with, we had the wrong required map, and for sure the wrong vehicle. But what we did have was a willingness to at least try it with what we did have. And for that I will always be grateful to the team. I am still shocked that we found the cache, and after only a few minutes at our projected ground zero. And now with this smiley, we are off to Evergreen to sign the Well Rounded Fizzy Challenge Cache. Thanks for the cache, and its special hunt. I will be adding this cache to my list of favorites. Spivey

By the way, my Subaru Outback drove us up this trail to these coords. (N40 38.002 W105 25.057) Would I do it again, maybe not, but we had to at least try. However, this point of the trail provided us a great camping area. After knowing the rest of the road, I might have been able to drive in much further, but in the end, I needed the training, so the hike was better for me in the long run. (I’ll suspect the rest of team, would have preferred to drive in a little further.)

Another Highlight was seeing a moose in Colorado with her baby by her side, just walking parallel to the 4x4 road.

This cache was a rewarding find! We hadn't planned on going for this cache, but with a late in the day detour to go for "The Vista" we had to try and tackle this one as well. At the campsite the night prior, we starting working the maps with a compass and pencil to see if we could get some reasonable estimates. It was a long shot with the maps we had, but success is certainly sweeter when it's a long shot. I was so happy to hear Spivey yell out "Found It"! SL

This was the highlight of my weekend. We notice the rare D/T on this cache while driving towards The Vista and decided to give it a try. All we had with us was a Colorado Delorme map, a compass and our GPSs. We made camp a few miles away and got to work. Our estimates on paper turned out to be about 400ft way. When we got to the area we put on our geocaching hats and started searching. I was mentally preparing myself for a DNF on this long shot, but before too long I heard Spivey yell "I found it." Ahhh, sweet success. I left a geocoin.

Went caching with a smart caching group in a new area. Worked out the final coordinates at our campsite and headed out this morning to find it. We were pretty darn close, well my backpack was. I set it down unknowingly right next to it. TFTC SL.
