Just down this road is a cross road heading west, named Tressel. Back on the hayday of coal mining that road was once the Sante Fe Railroad tressel. Now a road that connects to the old town of Rockvale. The old Sante Fe Railroad tressel connected Florence with the coal mining town of Radiant, located here. During the miners strife that took place back in the Ludlow days, many shots were fired at the locomatives which were bringing strike breakers to work the mine located here. The train was forced to back back into the town of Florence. Radiant was known for the good quality of coal that was mined here and in the entire area. Locomotives got 85 miles to the ton in contrast to 40 mtt with more expensive and inferior coal mined elsewhere. The Radiant mine produced as much as 500 tons of coal a day during 1916. The town boasted 80 homes, schools, and apts for unmarried miners. Radiants name changed to Pyrolite in an effort of impress coal buyers. During the depression years of the 1930's its name was changed again to Kenwood. Life was a tad grim then. Literally hundreds of people were wondering our County seeking work, many sick and hungry. The government took over the town and turned it into a transient camp named Kenwood. Homes were taken over by the homeless. Doctors, dentists, a hospital and a messhall was provided to feed the hungary. Those that stayed had to either work or go to school. After 1936 the buildings were removed or demolished.
